Driveway Garden, SEP 2003I planted a garden in July, 2002 along the back of my driveway atop a stone retaining wall. I was trying for a drought-tolerant dragonfly garden and it seems to be working. The juniper shrub finally died in the summer heat and I replaced it with a pair of coreopsis verticillata "Golden Shower" plants. The driveway garden has the following plants:

The coneflowers have finished their season and I'm getting ready to deadhead them. I like the heads so I leave them until they start going brown.
The butterfly weed is producing its last spotty blooms. The butterflies and dragonflies love this stuff. I like the nice color it gives my garden.
A pair of Coreopsis Verticillata "Golden Showers" provide the last yellow color of the season. They are growing nicely among mounds of cushion spurge.
The 'Neon' sedum is finally starting to bloom. The monarch butterflies seem to love it, as do the bees.
The dragonflies love to perch on anything tall in the garden. Here's one that stayed on a yarrow stalk for over an hour.
I planted black-eyed susans at street-side. They survived last year's harsh winter and seem to handle the pollution well. They're in full bloom now and give my stone wall a little color. I'll be planting more of these next year.
For kicks, I decided to try an Earthbox to grow veggies. I chose pepper plants (a favorite of mine). After liberal doses of insecticidal soap, the ants and other bugs have begun to leave my plants alone. Animals don't often venture up to my deck but I think I've been a little lucky here, too. I'm just starting to harvest them for stir frying... |
