September, 2003 GardenThe bed includes the following plants:

The stonecrop finally bloomed, exploding out of the left side of the garden. I've threaded the remaining coneflowers to give it some interest. There's a clematis vine (now at 8') growing up the trellis. There's also a shrubby euonymus somewhere under there, probably not to be seen again until the fall.
The stonecrop finally bloomed, bringing joy to dozens of bees and dragonflies. I leaned the remaining coneflowers onto the top of the stonecrop to give the insects the equivalent of a Quickie-Mart.
The clematis finished the year at 8'. The hard rains knocked down the remaining blooms (as seen in the second picture taken last month). It's wrapped tightly around the bamboo and should handle the winter with some minor care. The center of the garden is sliding into fall with reduced greenery. It is dominated by the cranesbill, yarrow, coneflowers, and salvia with baptisia and peonies lining the back row; all have reached bloom earlier in the season.
The right side of the garden is dominated by the catmint in the fall. Earlier in the season, there are coreopsis verticillata "Golden Showers" sitting in the middle of the catmint. The back row consists of Japanese peonies around false indigo. There's a lone fleabane plant springing up next to the peony.
The catmint is in full bloom. I've spotted a neighborhood cat rummaging around in it. It is always filled with bees and other insects and smells wonderful.
