June, 2003 GardenThe bed includes the following plants:
The garden, in all its glory.
The stonecrop provides the lushest green on the left side of the garden. Coneflowers, salvia, and fleabane weave among the stonecrop; none are currently blooming. The euonymus which provides a nice splash of early spring color is now driven into the background by the green.
The salvia is peeking through the stonecrop. The bright purple and heady scent are attracting the dragonflies.
The center of the garden is dominated by the cranesbill, yarrow, coneflowers, and salvia. The taller baptisia and peonies line back row.
The right side of the garden is dominated by the catmint and the euonymus. The back row consists of Japanese peonies around false indigo. The coreopsis verticillata "Golden Showers" in the foreground is a new addition, replacing a dead thuja occidentalis. There's a lone fleabane plant springing up next to the peony. You can see how fast everything grows when it rains six days out of twelve.
The cranesbill (geraniums) continue to spread througout the garden. The yarrow and salvia are growing in, too. The three are battling for control of the center of the garden. The cranesbill won the battle of first bloom in early June.
The Japanese peonies (known last year as "those expensive dried up twigs) are thriving this year. The rightmost one provided the first blooms of the season. The first three blooms were solid yellow with red edges on the petals; each has been unique in shape and color. The fourth bloom looks to be the normal white color.
The center Japanese peony blooms purple. So far, only one bloom has appeared, but I'm hopeful that a second will appear later in the month.
Laughing Buddha graces this garden.
The phlox divaricata 'Montrose Tricolor' are spring bloomers and are just coming up. They're planted around one of my trees, but I wanted to get a picture while the blooms are still fresh.
The euphorbia polychroma are blooming nicely, adding some needed color to my front yard. |
