July, 2003 Garden

The bed includes the following plants:

The whole garden

The garden, in all its glory.

The left side of the garden
(2 JUL 03)

The stonecrop provides the lush green on the left side of the garden. The salvia is bursting through the gaps as are the occasional fleabane blossoms. There's a clematis vine (now at 5') growing up the trellis. There's also a shrubby euonymus somewhere under there, probably not to be seen again until the fall.

Salvia Bloom
(2 JUL 03)

The salvia is peeking through the stonecrop and cranesbill. Dragonflies and bees fly around the thistle heads constantly.

The middle of the garden
(2 JUL 03)

The center of the garden is dominated by the cranesbill, yarrow, coneflowers, and salvia. The taller baptisia and peonies line back row.

The right side of the garden
(2 JUL 03)

The right side of the garden is dominated by the catmint and the new coreopsis verticillata "Golden Showers". The back row consists of Japanese peonies around false indigo. There's a lone fleabane plant springing up next to the peony.

Blooming geraniums, salvia, and yarrow
(2 JUL 03)

The cranesbill (geraniums) continue to spread througout the garden with salvia and yarrow poking out randomly. There are a couple of coneflowers growing in, too.

Fleabane

Fleabane
(21 JUL 03)

The first fleabane bloom (of many) graces the garden. Appropriately for Independence Day, the other blooms opened over the weekend forming a purple starburst. By month's end, the fleabane were everywhere with the coneflowers just starting to come in.

Purple coneflower
(22 JUL 03)

The first purple coneflower blooms in the garden. They popped right after a brief rainstorm.

(21 JUL 03)

The coreopsis verticillata produces lots of showy flowers. It blends nicely with its catmint neighbor

Peony
(26 JUN 03)

The Japanese peonies (known last year as "those expensive dried up twigs) are thriving this year. The rightmost one provided the first blooms of the season. The first three blooms were solid yellow with red edges on the petals; each has been unique in shape and color. The fourth bloom looks to be the normal white color.

Laughing Buddha

Laughing Buddha graces this garden.
